Weekendbee is on a mission to save the bees! One of the easiest ways to help the bees is to grow flowers. This summer we are growing flowers by supporting Melliferopolis-project with an Airstrip for Pollinators. Airstrip is a flower bed with a selection of native Finnish plants which will bloom from April to September and attract all pollinators. The airstrip is a living artwork in a Tarja Halonen public park of Helsinki, Finland.

Story by Ulla Taipale:

Melliferopolis intertwines bees and arts, using the city as its canvas. The project experiments with new ways of understanding bees, beekeeping and the ecology of the hive, as well as other insect pollinators and their habitats. Melliferos-project examines the role of honeybees in an urban context and explores the many different relations between humans and these semi-wild insects. A strong focus lies on pollination and includes all pollinators.

How does the project work?

Melliferopolis creates shared spaces for Human-Insect cultures and facilitates encounters through artistic installations in public spaces. They also design and organize visible actions such as participative workshops, lectures, rituals and performances. Christina Stadlbauer and Ulla Taipale began the project in Espoo and Helsinki in 2012,  with the idea of introducing public experimental
apiaries, and hands-on activities mixing theory and practice-based research relating to Apis mellifera.

Over the years, an international community around Melliferopolis has grown and the activities have expanded from Helsinki to other parts of the world. The common ground is pollinating insects, and particularly the bee and multiple investigations into her life and the mysteries of the hive, offering a true anti-disciplinary playground for curious minds.

The Hexa-Hive Village with Airstrip for Pollinators is a living artwork in a central public park of Helsinki, Finland. Depending on the environmental and seasonal conditions, the scene changes, offering an outstanding observation spot of urban nature, pollinating insects and endemic plants and flowers.
